There have been plenty of fires in California this season. The resulting smoke has been miserable. But, in our area we have been lucky so far this year, although we still have some months of the fire season left. With hotter, faster, and more unpredictable fires it is a good idea to stay vigilant and give your household a chance if the worst happens.

There is another threat from Hurricane Harvey and it is not necessarily for the poor victims in Texas that have suffered so much already. The new threat is for fraud and involves flood damaged vehicles from Texas. Some will be resold around the country, thousands of them most likely. After Hurricane Katrina, August 31, 2005, thousands of cars were shipped out of state to be sold and California its share.

Unscrupulous folks cleaned up the flooded vehicles, got new titles, and resold them on the out of state market. The same thing will happen again as flood damaged vehicles make it into the used car market.

From the Journal Sentinel “They will buy them, they will make them look OK, and sooner or later some unsuspecting party is going to buy one and it will end up being a nightmare,” Tolkan said.

The problem with flooded cars is the moisture gets into electronics and other vital components and can take time to manifest it’s self.

Be very careful what you buy. Only buy with reputable dealers. Make sure there has been an inspection. Find out where the car originated from, although there is no guarantee. If a price is too good to be true, buyers beware!

It seems to me there are a lot more people on the roads and they are driving crazier and faster than ever. In fact, the National Safety Council estimates that 40,000 people died in 2016. Their reasons and this short Video provides some insight as to why. If you like this video please shares it.

I focus on the road and what is going on around me while driving. I do not use my phone while driving. I do not use it at all and I turn it off while driving. If I need to use my phone or do anything other than focus on my driving I pull over into a safe spot in a parking lot or the side of the road. Driving safe keeps my auto insurance rates low.

If you like low auto insurance rates please drive safe. If you like the best auto insurance coverage for the best price call me. Please remember. It is the coverage that pays the claims not the price.

The full Eclipse could cause a black out on our highways tomorrow with heavy traffic and distracted driving! We have already had clients that had driving problems on Oregon on Friday; their trailer blew a tire. But, they were able to resolve their issue and continue on. We do not recommend driving during this event. Get somewhere safe before the event and stay put for a couple hours.

It would be nice to be at place like Northern Oregon to witness the phenomena, but I am glad I don’t have to drive back on Monday afternoon with the hordes of other Eclipse watches. The Highways are going to be a mess. Carry extra water, food, and expect delays. Fill your tank with gas and keep it full. Gas stations in the path could run out of gas. Bring plenty of patience and go slow and easy. YOU have your family’s life in YOUR hands!

Insight With Beth Ruyak

The Commissioner, Dave Jones, is right and I have been recommending for years; have an evacuation plan, a meet up point, and have a go bag. If you live in a high risk fire area, I recommend you keep a go bag in your car in case you have to flee a fast moving fire quickly or you get blocked out of your neighborhood by a fire.  When the authorities require you to leave, please leave immediately and don’t pull firefighters from their job of saving homes and put them at risk trying to rescue you.

All California home insurance policies and renter insurance policies are covered by the peril of fire. California HO3 & HO5 homeowners insurance, California  HO6 Condominium insurance, and California HO4 renter insurance policies cover loss of use too as well as personal property. It is important to note that there is no deductible applied to loss of use. Most policies cover “Loss of Use” because of mandatory evacuation even though your property might not be damaged in a fire.

It is important to read your policy to determine specific personal property exclusions and limits and whether you have ACV (actual cash value) or RC (replacement cost) coverage.

There is more California home insurance insight in the State Insurance Commissioner interview. Here is the California Department of Insurance home insurance coverage comparison link the Commissioner mentioned. There is lots of good information on the CA DOI web site.

I am not a fan of the CA FAIR Plan. It is expensive with limited coverage and from what I have read; many homeowners have jumped through all the hoops to get insurance and were still declined after an inspection because of a neighbors brush on adjacent property.

Now is the time to prepare!

Wild fires are ravaging our State now. Prepare an evacuation plan with your family and practice it. Have a prearranged meeting place in case you are suddenly blocked from your home by mandatory evacuations and emergency fire crews. Have an emergency kit with important items ready to go. In fact if you are in a high risk area, keep a kit in your car. Before an emergency take pictures of all your possessions and keep them on your cell phone or on zip drive in a safe place. Have a plan for your animals. Work out something with your neighbors just in case you are blocked from your home by a fire or authorities. Being prepared could save you much anguish!

You need to review your home insurance coverage with your agent every year. Know how your home insurance policy works. Now is a good time to call your agent and review coverage, before a fire explodes in your neighborhood. Check for gaps in coverage. Once a fire strikes an area, insurance carriers lock policies in the surrounding area and coverage can’t be changed until the fire is out.

There is no deductible for “Loss of Use”. Loss of Use provides temporary shelter and food for a covered claim (wild fire evacuation). “Loss of Use” covers mandatory evacuations by the authorities or for a covered loss of a destroyed home. We see news stories of families that have lost everything and have nowhere to go. Why, when you can protect yourself for a few dollars a month with renter insurance or homeowner insurance? Why live in your car or truck when you could be cool and cozy at a motel with TV and meals during an evacuation or loss?

Because of drought and multiple California firestorms over the years some carriers are canceling home insurance policy renewals based on the zip code the policy holder lives in. Insurance companies are not renewing many policies that they consider a risk to fire. Or, they won’t insure that new home you want to buy.

I can help! We are helping many folks with their homeowners insurance. I have affordable quality options with “A” rated carriers. I specialize in home insurance that other insurance agencies avoid.

Major carriers have been increasing auto insurance rates steadily lately, in large part because of distracted driving, in my opinion. To avoid an accident it is wise to keep your mind on the road. This vintage video illustrates some common sense driving.

One way to keep your mind focused on the road is to “keep imagining traffic hazards in front of you while you are driving”. It’s an oldie, but goodie just like this video. I use this trick and it works! Try it if you’re not too busy…

Worker Compensation and Heat Stroke

Heat of this magnitude is rare, dangerous and very possibly deadly,” the Weather Service in Phoenix warned on Monday.

It is up to you to protect your employees from heat stroke during this heat wave. Exposure can cause illness and death. Know the symptoms. Headache, dizziness, or fainting are just a few symptoms.

Use common sense and work early in the morning when you can. Make sure employees stay hydrated. Establish a heat illness prevention program.

You can learn more at this OSHA web site link and even print a Quick Card for your supervisors to keep and refer too. By following some simple steps you can protect your workers, avoid having a heat stroke claim, and a worker’s compensation insurance rate increase.

It will be coming to your local police force soon, a Textalyzer that is!

Traffic fatalities nationwide are on the rise, with close to 40,000 across the country last year, an increase of 6 percent. With a significant number of those fatalities attributed in part to distractions from phones, safety advocates — including Debbie Hersman, who heads the National Safety Council — say this could be big.

Drive safe!

Wow, look at some of these judgments in National Safety Council Video 21 Million! Does your business have a cell phone policy for its employees and drivers? Cell phones are a top distraction for drivers and hands free devices are not the solution.

Does your company have an enforced ban? How about a written safety program with a best practice cell phone use guidelines? If you are the average business owner your liability insurance protection probably is only $1 million to $2 Million. If you have drivers or employees that run errands you might want to rethink your safety program and insurance limits.

Home insurance doesn’t cover the removal of dead trees on your property. Homeowners are responsible for their own home maintenance and removing property hazards. If you have dead trees on your property you need to have them removed and that can be expensive. However, you might find something in this article that can help you.

Slow down a little bit and give your neighbors some room on the highway when it’s raining. Just these two steps might save you time and an auto insurance claim!

Think about it. How much time does a traffic ticket take? 30 minutes? Now way, it actually takes more time by the time you complete your online traffic school. How about a traffic accident? I have seen traffic accidents take months or years off the lives of people. At best a traffic accident can take hours.

For those of you who have a mandatory lender flood insurance policy, it appears from this article, that Californian’s are helping pay for the rest of the nations’ flood insurance premiums. Frankly I believe we are. We don’t have the hurricanes with the massive flooding they cause. It would take CA a long time to come up with its own flood insurance program though.

What’s a micro sleep?

On Channel 13 News this morning they reported a driver fell asleep and went through a telephone pole, knocking down the power lines and shattering the pole. Law enforcement reported the driver, fortunately, was OK. They didn’t show the car, but I imagine it was worse off than the driver. I wonder how much the PG&E bill will be for the pole and power line repairs?

The video link has some good advice about driving when sleepy.

Something cheerful In the news! Do you think its fake or real news? LOL :-)! What is real is; “Don’t drink and drive”. That is not to say don’t have fun. Take public transit, have a designated driver, or get a room near by in advance.

Folks can still have fun and not endanger themselves, their family, friends, and their neighbors on the road. Be safe and drive defensibly.

Tree Trimmer Killed While Working On Tree Identified

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the worker killed and his friends and family. The tree trimming trade and working with chain saws is very dangerous. I had some close calls when I was a young man.

Let’s hope the employer has a quality workers compensation insurance policy in place. Let’s hope the employer has an Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP) in place too. OSHA will look at that! Do you have an IIPP? Many contractors and business owners don’t, although IIPP’s are required by law!

As a service to our worker compensation insurance policy holders I provide a tailor made IIPP for each business. Having a good IIPP saves on workers compensation premiums. It can save your business if you have an OSHA visit!
